Wednesday, 17 August 2016
Aerospace or Aeronautical engineering is all about being a visionary and a dreamer, with the drive and ambition to make the ideas spring into life. Aeronautical engineers are the ones who design and build planes & spacecraft to make them more efficient, safer and faster.
Aeronautical Engineering, thus, deals with the development and growth of new technologies in the defense system, space exploration and aviation industry with several aspects like development, testing, designing, construction, operation, satellites and missiles, and also the maintenance of military as well as commercial aircraft.
This branch of engineering deals with the science of aerodynamics, and provides jam-packed career to the candidates who aim to fly high.
ELIGIBILITY & COURSES
Aeronautical engineering basically consists of two levels, one undergraduate and another one postgraduate. Candidates should be eligible as per the minimum eligibility criteria stated below for B.Tech or B.E. Program:-
- Candidate should have completed class 12th or an equivalent examination
- Candidates must have science subjects such as physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
- Candidates must have acquired at least 60% aggregate marks
- Candidates have to clear Joint Entrance Examination conducted by the IITs, or any other competitive examinations held by the different institutes to grant admission to candidates
Entrance Examinations & Courses
There are many state level and national level entrance exams for the admission in Aeronautical Engineering. However, JEE score is mostly considered as the qualifying marks by most of the institutes.  Several institutes have their own entrance exams to check the eligibility of the students.
Associate Membership Examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE) institute enables the working candidates, who are working in public or private sector or the diploma holder candidates, to get the bachelor engineering degree through distance education. For this degree, candidate has to appear for the Associate membership examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE) conducted by ASI (The Aeronautical Society of India).

Career Prospects
A career in Aeronautical engineering brings a wide scope for students for their expansion, growth and development, but is challenging too as it consists of designing and manufacturing of new and high technologies.  The main area of concentration of Aeronautical Engineers is on aircraft, satellite and space research.
In the initial stages of career, candidate has to work as a junior engineer or engineer trainee. As per the academic background, aptitude, performance, etc, candidates are placed in different sectors of the aircraft for training, after which they are placed as assistant aircraft engineers or as assistant technical officers. For further promotions, candidates need to clear the departmental examination too. With the experience, the level of candidates in this field also increases and one can become senior aerospace engineers.
Aeronautical Engineers can avail the job opportunities in the given sectors:
- Different government  and private airlines
- Aircraft manufacturers
- Aeronautical Development Establishment
- National Aeronautical Lab (NAL)
- Defense services and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)
- Civil Aviation Department etc
- Helicopter or various flying clubs
- And many more
